Working Together for a World Class Waterfront

Canada Lands Company (Canada Lands) was pleased to attend the Town of Port Credit Association (TOPCA)’s Town Hall Meeting entitled ‘Working Together for a World Class Waterfront’ on May 23, 2017. City of Mississauga staff and James Cox of Canada Lands provided updates on the City’s Official Plan Amendment (OPA) and work on the marina for 1 Port Street. The evening also featured remarks by Mayor Bonnie Crombie, the late Councillor Jim Tovey, former Mayor Hazel McCallion and MP Sven Spengemann.

The City and Canada Lands announced at the meeting that to allow for the future marina, Canada Lands has offered the City of Mississauga more than two acres of land and the entire 50+ acre waterlot, which would assist in ensuring the long-term protection and reinvestment in the marina. The aerial above shows the land and waterlot that would be available to the City for the future marina highlighted in yellow. The City advised that the proposed conveyance would be implemented through a marina agreement between Canada Lands and the City, which is expected to be tabled at Mississauga City Council in the Fall.

The City also advised the community that the Official Plan Amendment (OPA) is scheduled for Planning and Development Committee and Council next month (June 2017). The OPA is critical to establishing a development framework that provides clarity for the community and future development, and secures the areas needed for the future marina, public parks and waterfront trail. The OPA approval will ensure that the marina is protected in the City’s Official Plan and that Canada Lands can proceed in conveying to the City the land and waterlot, which will allow the City to pursue funding sources required for the future marina.

Many thanks to TOPCA and its Executives, Dorothy Tomiuk and Mary Simpson, for convening a well-attended and informative town hall.
